good day. i have been admiring your images. in the last one, i think that is the name of G-d in Hebrew letters. Und the German says “hier ist kein warum,” “here there is no why”. the ambiguity is exquisite. but to say “here there is no why,” we say “hier da ist kein warum.” the omission of “da” (there) suggests “here, i present you with something that is not a why.” maybe it’s a how, or a who, or a what. i am wondering.

    Hi Helga!

You’re correct about the Hebrew. I speak no German, that’s a quote of a quote that I found in this book. A Nazi officer said it to a prisoner at Auschwitz. So I too am intrigued by the ambiguity — it may have been intentional, but the intention was not mine.

Thanks for your insights, and thanks for looking.
